WILTSHIRE’S golfers missed out on a place in this month’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in yesterday’s final qualifying competition.
Qualifying took place at four venues and with three places available at each.
At Hillside in Southport, East Knoyle amateur Ben Stow, who qualified for last year’s Open at Turnberry, finished tied 17th on two over par with rounds of 76 and 70.
Stow won the Brabazon Trophy, the English amateur strokeplay competition, last weekend.
Wrag Barn pro Martin Sell finished a shot behind Stow on three over, Bowood’s Nick Brennan shot 77 and 80 and Sam Matton, who had come through regional qualifying, failed to card a second round after an opening 79.
At Woburn, Trowbridge’s Steve Surry (Cumberwell Park) finished on three over par Bowood’s Walker Cup player Jordan Smith finished on three over par at Sunningdale to finish tied 13th.
