STEVE Surry believes he could have caused more damage at the Shot Clock Masters in Austria last week.

Surry, 36, looked on course for an impressive finish to the tournament after a round of 65 on day two put him in the mix with the leaders.

But rounds of 76 and 73 on days three and four put paid to any hopes the Trowbridge man had of picking up an unlikely win.

Despite this, the Cumberwell Park-based player was generally pleased with his performance – especially given he was only called up to the tournament hours before it was due to begin.

He said: “It was an up-and-down tournament for me, I was a bit disappointed in the end. At the start of the week, I was driving to play a mini-tour event, so I would’ve taken 50th at a European Tour event.

“It was a good week in general. I was a bit disappointed in places, but it was nice to get a start on the main tour.

“I’ve played the course a few times before. I came 11th there in 2010. I knew the course. But I didn’t arrive at the golf club until Wednesday afternoon, so I didn’t get a practice round. I was a little bit under-prepared compared to the others.”

Surry’s attention will now switch back to Africa’s Sunshine Tour and the Euro-Pro tournament on his home course, Cumberwell Park, later this month.

While playing at his home course presents its advantages, Surry said additional pressure ensures there’s little advantage with expectations on the high side.

He added: “I’ve been playing on the Sunshine Tour since the start of the year and that has been going well. I’m 26th on the order of merit, so it’s been a nice start to the year.

“I’m going to be playing in Cumberwell too. Hopefully I’ll feature in six or seven EuroPro events before going back to Africa for the Sunshine Tour which will be a good experience.

“There is some added pressure (at Cumberwell), everyone expects you to win. “It’s not quite that easy unfortunately.

“Primarily I want to focus on playing as many Sunshine Tour events as I can. That’s my main focus.’’

“Their season only started in March and I missed the cut in the first event, then I came 30th and 13th so I’ve had a nice run.”
