WARMINSTER Town player-boss Jason Guy is gunning for another Wiltshire Senior Cup upset tomorrow when Calne Town come to Weymouth Street.

Warminster shocked visiting Toolstation League Premier Division outfit Devizes Town 3-2 in round two in November, and now Guy is plotting the quarter-final downfall of The Lilywhites.

He said: “It’s a similar situation to Devizes really.

“There’s no pressure on us, they are expected to come and turn us over.

“It’s a cup game, we’re at home and the pitch isn’t the best so both teams are levelled out a bit.

“If they come with the attitude maybe Devizes did and think they are going to walk it, then they could be in for a shock.

“I definitely feel we’ve got a chance of going on.”

Guy said the game was as much about a clash between leagues as between individual teams.

“Like I said before, I love playing in these games against the teams we used to play.

“There’s always been a question mark, is the Wessex League as good as the Toolstation League?

“It’s a chance to prove yourself against those teams.

“They are obviously going to be a strong team, stronger than Devizes.

“We know what they are going to be like but I think we’ve got enough quality to go and cause another cup upset.”

Calne beat lower league opposition in Shrewton United in the last round, and boss Robbie Lardner took a pragmatic view of playing another team in what is technically the division below.

He said: “If you get drawn against a Melksham or a Corsham you’ve got to deal with it, and if you get drawn against a so-called lesser side then you’ve got to deal with it as well.

“I suppose to play any team from a lower league is always a potential banana skin, but we won’t look at it like that.

“It won’t be an easy afternoon for us. I don’t doubt that for one minute it’s going to be hard work.

“But if we do all the things we’re good at we’ll go through to the next round.

“I’m not too worried about them, to be honest, it’s all about how we’re going to play.

“We aren’t going there to get beat, we want to win this competition and Warminster are in the way.”

Lilywhites utility man Ross Lye will miss tomorrow’s cup tie as he is serving the final game of his suspension.

Warminster’s David Watkins is suspended but Guy was unsure whether Tom Baxter was also suspended.

Warminster have had two games postponed in recent weeks due to the cold but Guy is confident the pitch would be playable.

Laverstock and Ford v Melksham Town HOLDERS Melksham Town take on Laverstock and Ford tomorrow in the quarter-final of this season’s competition, and current player-manager Wayne Thorne says his team are probably the favourites to win it again.

Tomorrow’s clash is a repeat of last year’s final, which saw Melksham triumph 5-2 at Hardenhuish Park under the tutelage of then boss Kelvin HIghmore.

Thorne said: “My lads have been great all season and if we play to our potential, there’s no one in the county that can touch us “We’re probably the favourites for it because we’re the highest-placed team (across all leagues) but that’s something my lads have got to deal with.

“Last year Corsham and Calne were probably better-placed than us and they have come short.

“They (Laverstock) are struggling in their league a little bit, but all that goes out the window.

“They would like to get one over on us after what happened in the final last year.”

Thorne has fond memories of the competition after he scored a blockbuster in last year’s final.

“I’ve reminded the lads about it at training this week,” he joked.

“You get one of those in your career and thankfully it was in a final.”

Gary Thorne will serve the third game of his suspension tomorrow, while Kris Beasley is rated 50-50 after suffering a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

In the other quarter-finals Corsham Town are away to Wootton Bassett Town and Bemerton Heath Harlequins host Highworth Town.
