Warminster Town suffered heartbreak in their 98 year quest to regain the Wiltshire Senior Cup, going down to an extra-time winner against Highworth Town.

Jason Guy's side went ahead in the first half when Tom Welch unleashed a stunning strike from 20 yards into the roof of the net.

Their lead was short-lived and a defensive error allowed Highworth to equalise just minutes after the restart for the second half.

Welch was again influential on the hour mark when his twisting run into the box was disrupted abruptly, earning his side a penalty.

However prolific striker and manager's brother Matty Guy's spot kick was saved by Ian Gill in the Highworth net.

Despite good efforts from both sides the game went to extra time where all 22 players became visibly strained with several regularly cramping up through exhaustion.

A defining moment in the game arrived at the start of the second period of extra time when Warminster left back Mark Breffitt was dismissed after being shown a second yellow card for a reckless lunge at Highworth's Matty Bennett, a constant threat down the right hand side.

The already lethargic defence, marshalled excellently by David Watkins, became stretched and a rare error led to the game's defining moment.

On 115 minutes a failure to clear their lines saw the ball fall to Alex Rudd on the edge of the area. The forward's shot was well palmed away by goalkeeper Jamie McGuickan but unfortunately for Warminster it fell straight into the path of Bennett who tapped straight into an empty net.

The physically drained ten men were unable to mount a second charge and slumped to the floor in despair when the referee blew to confirm their fate minutes later.
