WESTBURY missed a real opportunity to beat the Dorset & Wilts One South leaders in this hard-fought match.

For the second week in a row they dominated territory and possession but were unable to unlock Bridport’s aggressive defence.

Bridport, in contrast, managed to break through the Westbury defence three times to score triess.

Two came in a 10-minute burst in the first half and a penalty put them 13-0 up. However, Westbury this year have shown a steely determination and spirit that refuses to capitulate.

This was underlined by their attitude and effort when scrum-half Matt Inseal was yellow carded for a professional foul.

Westbury regrouped and camped themselves for the reminder of the first half in Bridport’s half with only desperate defence holding them out.

Unfortunately the hard work at the end of the first half was undone within first 10 minutes of the second, with Westbury knocking on straight from the kick off.

Bridport worked their way into the 22 and a well-executed crossfield kick was gatherd for a thirs try. This was quickly followed by a penalty to take Bridport into a 23-0 lead.

From this point on Westbury came at Bridport, changing the point of attack and regularly breaking through their defence, only to thwarted at the last moment.

Finally, they scored a well-deserved try through Gareth Vaughan, but the result showed the size of their improvement from when Bridport beat Westbury 86-0 in the final game of last season.
