TABLE TENNIS: VETERAN Trevor Lloyd took the senior men's title at the Wiltshire Table Tennis Closed Championships at Trowbridge on Saturday, beating 15-year-old Alex Kearney (Frome Dragons) 11-5, 11-8, 3-11, 11-6 in the final.

Lloyd, the number four seed, was made to work hard against Kearney, who is becoming a very impressive player, a powerful hitter with a good temperament.

The No 3 seed Ian Packford lost to Trevor Lloyd 7-11, 12-10, 3-11 and 12-14 in an abrasive quarter-final clash.

On the way to the final Alex had eliminated Pete Epps (Nationwide) in a straight three games 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 after Pete had looked so good when he took out No 2 seed Tim O'Mahoney with scores 3-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-6, a superb performance against a much-fancied player off to a 2-0 advantage.

Trevor Lloyd nearly came unstuck against Dave Richards (seed No 5) when he went 1-2 down but recovered to take the fourth game and then the decider comfortably enough, scores 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6.

Eddie Roofe, last year's winner of the men's singles, was unable to start and is likely to be out of action for some weeks with an injury.

Ian Packford and Tim O'Mahoney compensated somewhat for their singles defeats by repeating last year's men's double success when they met the Trowbridge combination of Trevor Lloyd and Chris Watkins, the county junior coach. The scoreline 11-8, 14-12, 12-14, 10-12, 11-6 shows how they had to fight hard for their victory until their opponents lost their way in the deciding game.

Barbara Roberts (Devizes) took the ladies' singles in a repetition of last year, beating old rival Sue Stone (Dauntsey's School) 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5.

Barbara then teamed up with club-mate Richard Jones to beat the Sue Stone and Ian Packford combination 5-11, 11-6, 5-11, 12-10, 11-5.

The consolation singles final was won by Andrew Hodges (Hilperton) who recovered from 0-2 down to win eventually if slightly fortunately when Alan Duke (Swindon Northside) had match point in the fourth game. Scores 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-7.

Trevor Lloyd's run of success continued on Sunday when he won the Wiltshire veterans' final 12-10, 11-4, 11-8 against Glen Freeman (GWR Swindon). Glen beat Alan Duke 10-12, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4 in the semi-final whilst Trevor beat Terry Parkins (PSP Westinsure) 13-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7.
