WESTBURY: A SUPERB century from captain Joe Breet laid the foundations for another league victory as the White Horse men kept their noses in front in Gloucester and Wilts One.

Breet led by example as he smashed 124 from 140 balls to steer Westbury to a competitive 252-4 after 50 overs. Wicketkeeper Adam Goodman claimed an impressive five victims after tea as Swindon crawled to 184-9, 69 runs short of their target.

It was Westbury's sixth win of the campaign and Breet is determined to keep the pressure on second-placed Lydney, who scraped home by nine runs against Biddestone. He said: "It would be nice if some of the other sides could do us a favour and beat the likes of Lydney and Gloucester.

"But we are playing some good cricket at the moment and our results are showing that.

"Each week we talk about what we will be a competitive total and then try to go out and achieve that. At least one batsman in the top five makes a big score every week -this week it happened to be me."

Breet paced his innings superbly on Saturday after he lost fellow opener Amwaa Prince for seven. When Mike Gunstan followed the Antiguan back to the pavilion seven balls later, Westbury were wobbling at 37 for two.

Breet and Carl Fourie (23) put on 62 for the third wicket before the latter was bowled by Mohamed Zohaib. At 99-3, Breet began to accelerate once more and he found a willing and able partner in Ben Whiting.

The pair shared a fourth wicket stand of 115 before Breet was bowled by paceman Irfan Wazir trying to add to his 14 boundaries.

Whiting finished unbeaten on 68 as Westbury set hosts Swindon 253 for victory.

Seamer Andy Carroll struck an early blow for the visitors when he removed opener Will Nichols with the scoreboard showing nine.

Home captain John Baden batted sensibly for his 57, but Swindon were unable to build any meaningful partnerships.

Darren Beasant (25), Paul Baden (30) and wicketkeeper Andrew Staff (23 not out) all contributed without ever threatening to take Swindon close. Carroll was rewarded for his probing seam bowling with three for 28 and there were three wickets for spinner Jacques Prinsloo.

Martin Dolman took two for 35 and Carl Fourie one for 30 in another strong bowling and fielding performance by Westbury. Breet singled out Ben Whiting for praise, adding: "I really enjoyed batting with him.

"He came over from Trowbridge where he was playing second team cricket. Ben is definitely a first team player and he is proving that with Westbury."
