THE Wiltshire Scullers School rowing team tasted success at Isis Sculls in Oxford, with three of the Staverton-based club’s crews rowing to victory.

Colette McCambridge, 17, won the womens J17 singles, while Donal Casey won the veteran singles and Brendan McCambridge and Philip Kittermaster won the veteran doubles event.

The junior crews racing ranged from ages 10-17 and competed in singles, doubles and quads, gaining either first, second or third places.

For Will Beckett and Jake Jendon, both 17, and Helen McCambridge, 12, it was their first competition.

Meanwhile, the school’s Sam Casey also competed at the recent Silverskiff international endurance event in Turin.

One of the youngest participants, Casey, 14, was rowing in a double scull with Tom King of City of Bristol. They were unopposed in their age group and unlucky not to win a pennant as they finished quicker than the U16 winners.

The Wiltshire Scullers School, based on the stretch between Staverton and Bradford on Avon, is one of the first of its kind run by the juniors for juniors.

It also has the backing of Wiltshire Council and local schools, with St Augustine’s, Clarendon and St Laurence each having six indoor rowing machines funded by a council grant and Wiltshire Scullers.

The club, captained by St Augustine’s pupil Richard Sharratt, 17, is seeking funding to put in their permanent landing stage which will offer easy access to the river at Staverton.

They competed at Henley Royal Regatta in its first year and will do so again next July.

The club is always looking for new members. Email the chairman at wiltshirescullers@gmail.com.
