AN Herring says that he had no hesitation in answering the call of former boss Adie Mings and rejoining Chippenham Town to help ease their injury crisis.

The 27-year-old midfielder returned to Hardenhuish Park on loan from Conference South Eastleigh at the end of last week and played the full 90 minutes in the goalless draw with Leamington last weekend.

Herring, nicknamed Spud, featured against Chippenham in Eastleigh’s FA Trophy defeat to the Bluebirds last November and the former Swindon Town man has not ruled out staying beyond his initial one-month loan deal.

“I got suspended just when the takeover happened at Eastleigh. They brought in a few players and I haven’t really been featuring lately,” said Herring, who originally left Chippenham to join Salisbury City in 2007.

“I got the call about going to Chippenham last Thursday and I was happy to go to help them out.

“I played with Adie and was managed by him too so he knows me well. I know what he asks and if I’m not playing well, I won’t get into the team.

“Chippenham are always there or thereabouts in their league and I know a lot of the lads there still. I’m there for a month but I’m taking things game by game and we’ll see what happens.”

Herring played in midfield, right back and even the centre of defence as Town’s third visit to the New Windmill Ground went the way of their previous two.

The Bluebirds started the game without seven regulars and before half-time Alex Kite and Greg Tindle had limped off, while Toby Osman received a second yellow card four minutes from time and was sent off for the fourth time this season.

In stoppage time, Ashley Williams and Luke Corbett had a heated exchange that continued as the players left the pitch at the end of the game and a home supporter threw a plastic bottle at referee David Avent.

The best chances of the first half came in the final minute as Tommy Smith threw himself at the hosts’ David Kolodynski’s feet.

The ball cannoned off his body but home skipper Lee Downes failed to find the empty net and Leamington were unable to unlock the resolute visiting defence.
