RISING sprint star Will Kennedy scorched to an impressive double victory in the South West Schools’ Track & Field Championships at the Exeter Arena.

The 14-year-old Matravers School student retained his junior boys’ 100m title with a legal personal best of 11.36secs, eclipsing his hand-timed 11.3 at the Wiltshire Schools’ and a wind-assisted 11.36secs at the Lee Valley Open in April.

Kennedy, who is coached by Colin Baross at Team Bath AC, then added the 200m title, in which he finished runner-up last year, in 23.21secs, his third fastest ever behind a hand-timed 23.0 and a windy 23.09secs.

Those times also consolidated Kennedy’s third place in the UK rankings for U15 boys at both distances.

“I didn’t run as quick as I would have liked but I was pretty pleased with that,” said Kennedy.

“The aim was to improve on last year which I did and I believe I also set a new championship record in the 200m as it was previously 23.3secs.”

Kennedy’s double was among 15 golds won by Wiltshire athletes at the regional event, the last chance to get the qualifying standards for the English Schools Championships next weekend in Gateshead.

Clarendon College student Abi Davies, 17, won the senior girls’ 100m in a personal best of 12.70secs to finally eclipse her 2010 best of 12.74secs.

Sheldon School’s Alex Stainthorpe powered her way to victory in the senior girls’ 3000m, just missing her personal best by over a second.

Representing Avon Schools Hannah Grubb, of Hilperton, won the senior pole vault with 3.50m.

Box-based athlete Livia Gauntlett finished runner-up in the junior girls’ 75m hurdles while older sister Elise was third in the senior pole vault.
