HAWKERIDGE’S Ben Harrison is celebrating after taking home the top prize at the Belgrave Open Snooker Championship.

The 21-year-old triumphed at the 32-man two day competition at the Belgrave Snooker Club in Plymouth, overwhelming home player Matt Williams 4-0 in the tournament final.

On day one, Harrison was third in group three behind Tiverton’s Darren Bond and Liverpool’s Clayton Humphries, notching up breaks of 115, 114, 95 and 74 along the way.

On the second day of competition, Harrison beat 16-year-old Ben Fortey, who plays out of Gloucester’s South West Snooker Academy, 4-2 to set up a quarter-final clash with fellow pre-tournament favourite Sam Baird, from Halberton in Devon.

The Wiltshire man cruised to a 4-1 victory before then posting the highest break of the tournament with a hefty 143, supported by another break of 72.

That sent him to the final by beating Darren Bond 4-2 in a high quality match, which also saw Harrison’s Tiverton opponent post breaks of 68 & 63.

Then in Sunday’s final, Harrison romped to an easy victory, posting frame-winning breaks of 82,72 and 65 to claim the title and £1000 in prize money.

Meanwhile, Trowbridge’s world number eight Stephen Lee suffered a disappointing 5-1 to world number 25 Marcus Campbell at the Wuxu Classic in China on Wednesday.

Lee had carried last season’s fine form into the start of the new campaign after reaching the final of the Guotai Liqueur Asian Players Tour Championship event one in China last weekend.

The Trowbridge cueman, 37, was beaten 4-3 by world number 16 Stuart Bingham who took the £10,000 first prize in Zhangjiagang.
