WILTSHIRE captain Joe Breet thinks that his side should be proud of their third-placed finish in the MCCA Western Division.

The county side were unlikely title-challengers going in to their final championship clash with Oxfordshire at Devizes but a five-wicket defeat ended any chances of a fairytale three-day campaign as Cornwall topped the table.

But Breet thinks that Wiltshire have a lot to shout about and said: “If someone had told me at the start of the season that we’d finish third in the three-day competition and be in the one-day final, I’d have thought they were mad.

“We’ve played some good cricket this year but you always get greedy and want more, so we were disappointed to have lost against Oxfordshire.

“Third-placed is as good as a Wiltshire side has ever done before, so we’ve done really well.

“There’s definitely been a lot of improvement and we’ve not got a huge trophy final to look forward to next week - we’re all excited and there are a few nerves there too.”

Steve Bullen hit an unbeaten 89 and Jayden Levitt made 71 as Breet's men posted 306-9 in their first innings, with Chad Keegan taking 3-64 for Oxfordshire .

Oxfordshire declared on 275-8 after Richard Kauffman's towering 168 to put themselves in a position to pick up the bonus points necessary to finish above Wiltshire.

Henry Langford took 3 -19 and Jake Roberts claimed 2-44.

The county were then skittled for 129 in just over 50 overs in their second innings, with only Henry Langford reaching double figures (24) after Ed Kilbee scored 66.

Oxford reached their target just before lunch on the Tuesday, scoring 164 for 5 wickets.

Tahir Afridi did his best to stem the tide as he finished with figures of 4-75.
