ERIC HUGHES MEMORIAL KNOCKOUT CUP: Fortune produce upset

Fortune knew they had to be at their very best if they were to have any chance of upsetting the odds and that’s what they were as Budge Hylands side put in their best display since joining the league to claim a 4-3 win.

Brunel led through a Luke Hodder and extended their advantage when Ross Menghini netted. Matt Jenkins halved the arrears before the break to set up a fascinating second half.

Richie Bolter got Fortune back on level terms only for Brunel to regain the lead courtesy of Dave Nolan. Fortune fashioned another equaliser thanks to a second of the game from Bolter. Last season’s top scorer had the chance to put Fortune ahead but he missed from the penalty spot.

With the game heading towards extra time, Bolter atoned for his miss from the spot by scoring his third of a crazy morning to seal Fortune their outstanding result.

AFC Calne v Wren FC – walkover to Wren FC

WREN FC have made it into the first round without kicking a ball, Carl Murray’s second division side received a walkover following the shock resignation of Premier Division side AFC Calne from the league.

Biddestone Social 7 FC Buscots 3

THIRD Division FC Buscots' dreams of causing a cup shock at two-time winners Biddestone Social lasted just five minutes as once the Social had taken the lead on five minutes their coasted to a 7-3 win.

Nat Auckland finished well from eight yards to give Biddestone a fifth-minute lead.

Jake Hiscocks' excellent finish on 32 minutes doubled Biddy's lead and it was game over on 39 minutes when Danny Jones headed onto Martin Johnson who made no mistake in adding a third.

Three minutes before half time Biddestone added their fourth thanks to a second from Hiscocks who drove into the top corner from 25 yards.

The second half picked up where the first had finished with Biddestone pressing forward and their fifth goal arrived in the 49th minute, Danny Jones scoring from six yards to finish off an excellent team move. A second from Jones on 66 minutes saw him tap in from three yards for 6-0.

Buscots replied on the 68th and 69th minutes with goals from Ashley Edwards and Jack Bramwell only for Auckland to add number seven for with a similar strike to the one that had opened the scoring.

Although the game was won it was Buscots who had the final say when Phil Little scored 11 minutes from time to make the score line a little more respectable for the losers.

Castle FC 4 Bremhill View Boys 2

FIRST Division Castle FC welcomed Bremhill View Boys to their base at Sands Lane.

After two heavy defeats in their first two games at home the Castle were determined to right some wrongs and get their first win at home this season.

After last week's intense local derby against FC Buscots, which was won well by The Castle, Tom Perkins decided to mix his team up and give a few players who hadn't played much some much deserved game time.

Perkins' decision to do this was rewarded as his team ran out comfortable 4-2 winners.

Castle got off to a perfect start as club stalwart Dan Sloan showed good skill to glide past a couple of players before firing a rocket into the back of Bremhill’s net to give his side a 1-0 lead.

Castle created chance after chance and Bremhill were restricted to a couple of counter attacks. After more pressure birthday boy Jonny Emm got off the mark for the season when he fired low and hard from an acute angle to give the Castle a two goal cushion.

Castle took their foot off the gas and were made to pay when Bremhill got themselves a penalty and Shane Minnis took the chance and made it 2-1 and this is how the sides went in at the break.

This gave Bremhill a sniff and after a spell of pressure from the away side they got themselves back on level terms from a corner that was headed home at the back stick by Kieron Gleed.

Castle then stepped it up a notch and after some good play between Sloan and Perkins, Perkins teed Sloan up and he made no mistake slotting into the bottom corner and Castle had their noses in front again.

Fifteen minutes from time Nathen Emm wrapped things up for his side when he popped up unmarked at the back post and slotted in his team's fourth of the morning.

Chippenham West End 6 Semington Rovers 2

SECOND Division Chippenham West End were underdogs going into their game with Premier Division Semington Rovers but, as predicted, an upset was on the cards and so it proved as West End came from two down to claim a 6-2 success.

Stuart Barber’s neat turn and shot into the bottom corner put Semington ahead and when Nick Mead prodded home a loose ball to make it 2-0 it looked as if Semington were going to stroll to victory.

Overconfidence then set into the leaders and West End started to turn things around, with Scott Nash finding James Mulhall on the edge of the area and he planted the home to reduce the gap before half time.

West End started the second half well with Mulhall again finding the net early on to restore parity at two each. Dave Byatt’s 20 yarder put West end in front and Mulhall completed his hat-trick to increase his teams lead when he went one on one with the Semington keeper.

Phil Mellor scored from a corner for 5-2 and Scott Nash finished with aplomb to wrap up an incredible 6-2 victory for his team.

Christian Malford 3 Prestige Bodyworks 4

PRESTIGE Bodyworks moved into the next round of the Eric Hughes Knockout Cup with a 4-3 victory away at Christian Malford’s Kington Langley pitch.

Although the First Division team played some nice football, Division Three Malford made them battle all the way for their win.

Prestige opened the scoring after just five minutes from Simon Pitman’s low shot. Prestige had further chances to extend their lead but Gerald Fawcitt in his first outing as a keeper for Malford was in excellent form.

Malford equalised in the 23rd minute when Paul Knight struck home from close range to take the sides in level at the break.

Prestige were the more lively at the start of the second half and after 51 minutes regained the advantage when Sam Pring shot home to give them a 2-1 lead. After 55 minutes Malford failed to clear a cross on the right from Simon Pitman and Sam Pring took advantage to score his second and give Prestige a 3-1 lead.

Malford got back into the game in the 70th minute when Prestige keeper Steve Warner hit a clearance straight to Malford’s Mark Golledge who promptly lobbed the ball back over the keeper to reduce the score to 3-2.

Prestige however brought back their two-goal advantage in the 72nd minute when James Pope headed home Sam Pring’s corner from the right.

Malford reduced the deficit to 4-3 in the 77th minute when the Prestige defence failed to clear Stephen Lynch’s headed ball, leaving Paul Knight to prod home his second and Malford’s third.

The match was played in an excellent spirit by both teams and was well refereed by Richard Colman.

Crossblades FC 3 Melksham Cosmos 3 (AET, Crossblades won 5-4 on penalties)

CROSSBLADES FC picked up their first win of the season in this epic cup battle with fellow Division Four outfit Melksham Cosmos who lost out in a thrilling penalty shootout after 120 minutes failed to find a winner.

The game started brightly for Cosmos with midfielder Phil Carter finding time and space to dictate the play.

Crossblades didn't settle quickly in this game and weren't able to adapt to the wind and rain, often playing through balls right through to Harvey in the Cosmos goal.

Cosmos began to threaten more as the half went on and Chris Berrelly's movement was always a problem for the overworked Crossblades defence.

Against the run of play, Carl Jacobi played a deft touch through to Mike Booth, Booth was able to utilise his pace and poke the ball round the advancing Harvey and give the Blades a lead.

Somewhat rallied by this, Cosmos started to press harder and were rewarded for their efforts with Marc Scammell’s goal bringing them right back in to the cup tie.

The second half saw Cosmos use the wind to their advantage with several shots on target that John Hampshire was equal to in the Crossblades goal.

As time ticked by, both teams became nervous of conceding and seemed to hold back.

Captain Tim Chilton made three changes for Crossblades with the intent of introducing some fresh legs and energy in to the game. Almost immediately Will Wright had lots of freedom down the left wing, putting in several crosses and forcing the Cosmos keeper in to a few good saves.

As the 90 minutes ended, this tie felt like it would go the distance and be settled by penalties.

A rousing team talk from Chilton was kicked in to touch when shortly after the restart a penalty was awarded to Cosmos after James Squire was adjudged to have tripped his opposite number in the box.

The resulting spot kick was coolly placed home by Marc Bowden and Cosmos were clearly fired up for this game. A nasty knock to the face for Blades' Jamie Weir sent him from the filed for treatment and change of shirt, yet the young warrior returned to continue to fight for the cause.

Almost immediately after the restart the Blades went on the attack, winning a free kick on the right side of the goal, 21 yards out.

Squire stepped up and with his phenomenal left foot, side footed round the wall and beyond the helpless Harvey.

This game was very much in the balance now and things went from bad to worse for Cosmos as Mike Booth once again raced clear and slotted the ball home giving the home side the advantage with several seconds of the first period of half time left.

There was further drama before the first half of extra time finished, Liam Matthews sustained a calf injury that he could not recover from. Chilton had made all his substitutes, so the Blades would be playing the remainder of this game with 10 men.

Camped in the Crossblades half, Cosmos were throwing everything at their opponents, Chilton, Squire and Taylor Worthy responding with thunderous challenges and last-ditch defending.

Gareth Cole and Mike Booth were trying their best to play against the extra man and their efforts are to be commended. Yet, with eight minutes remaining, a high through ball bounced just right for Matt Brock and the ball was headed over the advancing Hampshire to bring the scores level.

In the shootout, Cosmos scored first with the shot Hampshire nearly saved, Squire nettled coolly for the Blades Cosmos second kick from Ryan Swann was well saved by Hampshire.

Three more successful penalties from the Blades' Jacobi, Jamie Weir and Gareth Cole and 3 from Cosmos meant that Will Wright had to scored to win the epic battle. Wright dispatched the penalty in great fashion giving Crossblades the victory in the monumental cup tie.

Both teams were a credit to the league and behaved in impeccable fashion, coupled with a great refereeing performance from Adam Osbourne, this game will go down as one of the classics.

Crossblades captain and manager Tim Chilton commented "This game could have gone either way, maybe it was shaded by Cosmos but for sheer grit and determination may be the Blades finally got some reward for their efforts."

FC Boroughs 10 FC United of Chippenham 3

FOR a second week running, first division FC Boroughs were given a dream cup pairing that never really tested them to the full. Drawn at home to Division Four newcomers FC United of Chippenham it was always going to be a Sunday morning stroll for the Malmesbury-based side who breezed into the next round after their 10-3 win.

Jack Ellis led the scoring with a four timer, Liam Bailey helped himself to three, Kristain Trimble, Sam Parker and Sam Jenner made up the winners' 10.

Jack Hanks, Paul Hussey and Callum Hussey replied for the Chippenham youngsters who had been given a footballing lesson by their more experience hosts.

FC Colerne 3 Bradford Renegades 5 (AET)

FIRST Division Bradford Renegades proved that they are a force to be reckoned this season after putting in an excellent shift to beat Premier Division FC Colerne 5-3 after extra with Sam Jordan again being the star of the show as he scored all five of Renegades goals.

A well-worked Renegades team goal from Jordan gave Bradford the edge for about 70 minutes. Colerne levelled through Ashley Petty late on and despite a clear flag the referee allowed a late equaliser to stand and force extra time.

Jordan regained the lead for Bradford early in added time and he completed the perfect hat trick when he headed in to give the visitors to Bath Road a 3-1 lead.

Jordan added another header for 4-1 before Colerne pulled one back thanks to a second from Ashley Petty.

Jordan added his fifth of the game when substitute Kieran Powell crossed to the near post for him to poke home.

Colerne scored again late on via Paul Bates but Renegades were deserved winners feeling slightly aggrieved by some decisions left them with four bookings and what they thought was a perfectly good goal chalked of in normal time.

FC North Wilts 2 Staverton FC 10

SECOND Division Staverton proved too strong for their fourth division opponents FC North Wiltshire at Leafy Lane. The Division Two leaders crushed their hosts 10-2 to have a trouble-free route into the first round proper.

Staverton took the lead after seven minutes through Jason Povey. North Wilts gave their guests a slight scare when Simon Gray equalised for the home side on 19 minutes.

A second from Povey on the half hour mark regained the lead for Staverton and soon after Levi Woods made it 3-1. Staverton were unlucky not to go further ahead when a John Baker shot rebounded off the North Wilts post.

North Wilts pulled one back from the penalty spot on 37 minutes with Simon Gray scoring his second of the morning after Staverton keeper Wayne Gerrish conceded a needless foul.

Fifteen minutes after the restart Staverton were 4-2 ahead with Povey completing a hat-trick.

Zack Manna added number five for Staverton and after that it was all one-way traffic in the final 20 minutes with Staverton adding another three goals in the space of three minutes.

Woods got his second on 80 minutes, a minute later Simon Parfitt scored Staverton's seventh and immediately from the restart Sam Clarke scored the goal of the game with a volley from 40 yards.

Staverton kept up the pressure and John Baker added the ninth on 87 minutes with Manna completing double figures for Staverton with his second goal two minutes from the end.

North Star A 0 Talbot FC 2

THIRD Division Talbot FC produced one of the upsets of the day when they defeated first division and local rivals North Star A who, despite playing the game with 10 players would have expected to make the final 32. Instead Talbot came out on top winning 2-0.

In an evenly-matched first half the deadlock was broken five minutes before the break when Nathan West conjured up a delightful lob over the Star’s advancing keeper for 1-0.

The second half ebbed and flowed and Talbot scored their second on 69 minutes through Mark Sharratt who picked his spot from 40 yards out to place the ball into the top corner to seal what was an excellent win for Talbot.

North Star B 4 Corsham Park Rangers 17

A WEEK after their lost out to North Star A in a cup thriller, Corsham Park Rangers travelled to Beversbrook for a meeting with North Star B in an all-third division cup affair.

North Star could only field 10 players for the game and were eventually put to the sword by a rampant Rangers side who after leading 5-0 at the break found their scoring boots to run out 17-4 winners.

It took Corsham 10 minutes to get the first when Kane Kauppinen got to the byline and his cross was met by Kadir Ayhan whose looping header went over the keeper and into the net.

Six minutes later they got their second when a shot in was handled in the box and Matthew Spear stepped up to take penalty, his effort was saved but he managed to turn the rebound home for 2-0.

A minute later they were three up when a one-two between Kauppinen and Owen Bryan saw Bryan score his first of six.

Number four came on 25 minutes. Kadir Ayhan cross picked out Simon Young who slotted ball home, the fifth came in four minutes before the break, Bryan unleashing a powerful shot which flew across the keeper to give Rangers their 5-0 half-time lead.

The second half was even more exciting with 16 goals scored, Gary Lock finishing well on 47 minutes and he added his second two minutes later.

A minute later it was 8-0 with Dan Clements tapping in from close range, shortly after Bryan completed his hat trick when he scored from the penalty spot.

The floodgates were well and truly open and on 60 minutes Corsham scored their tenth, a Kauppinen shot looked like going in but was helped on its way by Clements.

Star finally got on the scoresheet when a corner taken by Dan Allison went straight in to make it 1-10. Joy was shortlived as soon after Clements' cheeky chipped effort saw him complete his hat-trick to make it 11-1.

A fourth from Bryan took it to 12-1 but straight from kick-off North Star’s Dan Allison spotted the Rangers keeper off his line and chipped ball over him into the net for his second of the game.

In the final eight minutes an incredible seven goals were scored. Star got their third when Allison scored from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

Kauppinen got his name on scoresheet when a mix up in Star's defecse enabled him to score low to goalkeeper's right. Bryan was left unmarked tap home his fifth, Gary Lock scored his third and Corsham 15th, substitute Chris Neuman popped up at far post for number 16 and soon after North Star’s captain Rob Lymath scored from the penalty spot.

Then, with nearly the last kick of the game Bryan bagged his sixth and Corsham’s 17th.

Pig & Whistle United B 0 Goatacre CC FC 8

FOURTH Division newcomers Pig & Whistle United B were unable to take their recent good league form into their home tie with second division Goatacre CC FC, who played like a team who were 22 places clear of their hosts in league positions as they cruised to an 8-0 win.

Danny Horwood put Goatacre ahead from the penalty spot, Rob Murphy’s delightful free kick and a first of the morning from Ed Wilkins gave the visitors a 3-0 half-time lead.

Wilkins took his tally for the game to four with three more second-half goals, Connor Rafferty and Ed Kilbee with their first goals for the club makde up Goatacre’s eight.

PSC Galaxy v Sutton Benger – Walkover to Sutton Benger

WHAT was expected to be one of the ties of the round between third division hotshots PSC Galaxy and second division Sutton Benger was a non-event as Sutton Benger were awarded the game after Galaxy were unable to find a pitch to host the game.

Somerford FC 11 Trowbridge Rangers (Sunday) 0

FOURTH Division newcomers Trowbridge Rangers suffered an 11-0 mauling at Somerford who, thanks to their eight-goal blast in the first period, had the tie wrapped up before the break.

Chris Yeo’s hat trick, Matt Holdaway’s double and singles from Louis Gough, Ashley Monaghan and Will Stone put the villagers in total control after 45 minutes.

An improved performance from Rangers in the second half, coupled with Somerford taking their foot of the gas, restricted them to three more goals. A second from Stone and a goal each for Will Robbins and Jamie Holdaway completed what was a walk in the park for Spike Chandler’s side.

Southwick Wanderers 2 Bug & Spider FC 4

REIGNING cup holders Bug & Spider begin the defence of the trophy by overcoming a potential banana skin away at second division Southwick Wanderers, who gave a good account of themselves before dropping out of the competition to a depleted Bug side, who gave missing manager Marcus Lovesey a belated wedding present.

Last season’s cup winning hero Mark Dolman set Bug & Spider on their way, James Aplin doubled their lead and Dave Herring’s third before half time gave the holders some breathing space.

Southwick came out fighting in the second half and on 55 minutes the pulled a goal back through Jack Parker who netted after good work from Carl Davies.

A second from Mark Dolman restored the Bug’s three goal cushion and, although Stuart Powell fired home a 25 yard thunderbolt 10 minutes from time to give Southwick hope of a late comeback, they were unable to find the net again as Bug saw the game out to book their place in the draw for the next round.

Sportzcoach Dragonz United 2 GRFC 7

SECOND Division GRFC had to twice come from behind before getting the better of their fourth division opponents Sportzcoach Dragonz United, but once Tam Laidlaw’s visitors to Stanley Park got their noses in front their was no turning back as they went on to claim a comfortable 7-2 success.

Paul Walker saw his opener for Sportzcoach cancelled out by Rob Jefferies who header brought the scores level.

Mark Bowsher regained the lead for Sportzcoach but they were pegged back for a second time thanks to a neat finish from Robbie Burton and then fell behind when Matt Baker heded GRFC ahead.

The second half was all GRFC and they increased their lead thanks to a wonderful chipped effort from Burton.

Jordan Tarrent made it 5-2 and substitute Connor Laidlaw added the sixth before Tom Watchman set up Burton to score his third of the morning and his teams seventh.

Westbury Rangers 7 Trowbridge Town Supporters Club 1

PREMIER Division Westbury Rangers and fourth division Trowbridge Town Supporters Club met at this stage of the cup last term with the former registering an 11-3 win.

Rangers, as expected, won again this term but their 7-1 winning margin was a credit to the supporter’s club who kept going for the 90 minutes.

Mark Young struck early on for Westbury scoring after five minutes, after that the supporter’s held Rangers at bay until the 27th minutes when Beau Blakeman added a second for the Meadow Lane club.

Westbury were quick out the blocks in the second half and Young found the net again on 49 minutes and he completed his hat-trick on 60 minutes when he scored from the penalty spot.

Blakeman got his second of the tie in the 70th minutes but just as looked as if the hosts would cut loose Andy Anderson’s bullet header from a corner reminded them that the supporters’ club were still a part of the game.

Anderson’s goal was little more than a consolation as five minutes from time Blakeman completed the second three timer of the game and for good measure Dean Ranger scored his first goal for Westbury on 88 minutes to see Shaun Gardiner’s side safely through to the final 32.

White Horse FC v Pack Horse Rangers – walkover to White Horse FC

A WEEK after White Horse beat Pack Horse Rangers 9-3 in their WG Parr Trophy clash the sides were drawn together in the Knockout Cup and as predicted Clive Black’s side completed a quick-fire cup double over their third division opponents.

But it came in the easiest of ways as Pack Horse were unable to raise a team for the game, giving the second division outfit a free passage into the next round.
