ROYAL Wootton Bassett's Smith sisters, Katy and Lucy, recorded a superb singles double at the Wiltshire ladies county finals at Supermarine last Saturday.

Katy, 19, making her debut in the main ladies finals, lifted the ladies singles crown, while elder sister, Lucy, 21, made a successful defence of the junior singles (U25) for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in the last six seasons.

An England U18 international last season, Katy was involved in a tight game for 14 ends against singles holder Jean Collier (Box).

She was 4-2 up at five ends but 9-4 down at nine, however had drawn level 11-11 at 13.

Smith dropped a single on the next but scored a full house four on the 15th end to move 15-12 up and never looked back pulling anyway to a 22-13 victory after 20 ends with a run 1, 3, 2 on the last three ends.

Her elder sister has dominated the junior singles (U25) event since 2013 having first won the title in 2011 as a 16-year-old.

She regained the title in 2013 and made it four successive wins in a row with a 21-17 victory over Georgina Newman (Avon) last Saturday.

In a tight match throughout Lucy was tied 4-4 at five ends, 8-8 at nine and 10-10 at 12. However, she collect a full house score of four shots on the 14th end to go 15-10 up only for Newman to fightback and tie matters again at 15-15 on end 17.

A three on the next saw Smith go 18-15 up but Newman cut the deficit to 18-17 on the 19th end only to drop another three on end 20 as Smith claimed the title again and extended her remarkable record in this event.

Box won three of the other four titles contested, while hosts Supermarine won the other - pairs championship.

Devizes contested two finals, pairs and triples and were beaten in both, albeit on an extra end in the pairs.

Devizes duo of Rose Merritt and Sue Ochyra were 10-7 down at 12 ends but had drawn level at 13-13 after 19 ends in the pairs.

They dropped a single on end 20 but Ochyra forced an extra end when she drew shot with her last wood of the match on the 21st end. However, they still lost out to hosts Supermarine in the deciding shoot-out.

Later in the day the Devizes duo were joined by Patricia Reeves in the triples against Box. They led 3-0 after three ends but dropped a five on the next and were 10-5 down after nine ends and 14-7 adrift at 12.

They got back to only 14-11 down after 15 ends but a brace of twos ended their revival and finally lost 18-12.

Box foursome of Carol Grenfell, Karen Funnell, Sue Cooke and Alex Jacobs edged out Supermarine with a single on the last end of the fours final for victory after trailing 15-10 at 16 ends.

Jacobs, the reigning national ladies senior singles champion, also had to draw on all her vast experience to come from 8-3 down at seven ends, 12-7 at 15 and 13-10 at 18 to grab a single on the 21st and last end to edge out Ann Hindley (Wilton) 14-13 in the two wood singles final.
