A YEAR after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Rowdy Cow Rowde in the final of the Ken Clarke-sponsored WG Parr Trophy, Trevor Rawlings took his Somerford side back to Corsham Town’s Southbank ground.

This the top-flight side lived up to their favourites tag as they defeated first division Lavington Rangers 3-0 to lift the trophy for the very first time.

After a nervy start by both teams, Somerford had the first chance when Josh Hughes hit the post.

Lavington were having difficulty in containing the player of the final, Somerford’s winger Ashley Monaghan, whose crosses and link up play with defender Simon Pitman and striker Hughes was to trouble them throughout the first half.

Strong play from midfielders Will Gale, Will Stone and Lee Fernandez also allowed Somerford to dominate.

Lavington had keeper Tom North to thank for several excellent saves to deny their opponents as well as defender James Squire whose blocks on the line saved his side on several occasions.

After several near-misses Somerford finally broke the deadlock after 41 minutes when Monaghan beat the defence to a Josh Hughes lob to head home and give them a 1-0 lead.

Somerford again started brightly and went 2-0 in front after 54 minutes when Gale's superb lofted pass was headed home by Stone.

Cullen Wylie went close for Lavington as his narrowly missed the target.

Chris Cox in the Somerford goal, who had little to do in the first half, was called into action as the Lavington forwards became more confident.

Somerford captain Chris Scollen began steadying his defence as his team regained control and in the 81st minute substitute Matthew Holdaway put the game beyond Lavington as his excellent shot from distance gave the Lavington keeper no chance.

The game was very well refereed by Neil Hawker aided by his assistant referees Tony Frith and James Newbon and fourth official Maurice Chilcott.
