CHIPPENHAM Town chief Mark Collier says a goalless draw at Hungerford Town was a satisfactory outcome on Saturday.

The two teams were evenly matched at Bulpit Lane, with the Bluebirds having the better of the first half before Hungerford rallied after the break.

Lee Phillips and Alex Ferguson went closest for Chippenham, while keeper Kent Kauppinen was called into action at the other end to deny Mark Draycott and Alan O’Brien.

Although Chippenham had enough chances to come away with a win, Collier was more than happy to return home with a point.

“It was a hard fought 0-0,” said Collier. “If you look at the teams in the league we’re probably local rivals, so that always makes for a tough game.

“We started really well and created three or four good chances and probably should have got ourselves in front at half-time.

“Lee Phillips missed one really good chance, which he’ll be disappointed with. By his own admission he probably should have done better there.

“They came back at us in the second half but we stood up to that really well to what they threw at us.

“They’re a good side so a draw is a good outcome for us.

“We’d have taken a point at 3pm but come 4.45pm there’s probably a slight twinge of disappointment that it wasn’t all three.”

Chippenham had to deal with the early loss of Ryan Campbell through injury and Collier admitted he felt for the youngster, who was one of five changes to the Town side.

Collier said: “Ryan came into the team but suffered a dead leg after only about ten minutes so had to come off.

“He’d started pretty well so we’re all disappointed for him that he didn’t get more of a chance to show us what he can do.

“It’s frustrating because that’s another injury we have got to worry about now.”

The most satisfying aspect of the game was Chippenham’s defensive exploits as they made it back-to-back clean sheets following the 1-0 win over Frome Town on New Year’s Day.

Collier added: “We defended well and that’s two clean sheets in a row.

“We’re looking solid at the back and now we need to look at getting it sorted in the final third of the pitch as well.

“If we can do that we should start climbing the table.”

Chippenham are back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Dorchester Town to Hardenhuish Park.
