CORSHAM Town chief Trevor Rawlings is hoping that that his side’s Wiltshire Senior Cup run is going to get a little more exciting.

The Southbank side progressed through the first round last month with an uninspiring win over Wiltshire League outfit Supermarine Sports and despite hosting local rivals Chippenham Park at the next stage last weekend, a second round derby still couldn’t spark things to life for Corsham.

Rawlings’ men ran out 2-1 winners but the Corsham boss concedes that the game was ‘non-event’.

“For some reason, it was a really quiet affair,” said Rawlings.

“The last round was pretty dire dour and even though it was a local derby, this one was the same. It was a total non-event.

“It took them a long time to have a shot on target and I think our goalkeeper only had one shot to save whilst theirs probably only had three or four saves to make.

“Shane Blackmore scored at the end for them and you thought there was going to be an onslaught in the last five minutes but it never happened.

“The team-talk before the game was that the most important thing was getting through the next round but hopefully it’s going to be a bit more exciting.”

Matt Jenkins curled home a free-kick to put Corsham ahead in the first half before the midfielder headed home his second after the break from a Lewis McCarron delivery.

Shane Blackmore reduced the deficit late on for Dave Ferris’ visitors but it proved little more than a consolation strike.

Park assistant manager Tim Smith said: “It wasn’t really like a derby game at all. The conditions weren’t great and there wasn’t a big crowd.

“We were pretty depleted, with a couple of guys away on other duties, one or two cup-tied and Georgie Nash away with England (futsal).

“Our goalkeeper Conor Johns was injured so Rob Pocock had to play in goal but he can do that and he did well throughout the whole game.

“I thought that the first half was pretty even stevens but they scored from a free-kick, which was unfortunate for us.

“There wasn’t a lot in the second half either but they scored again from one bit of quality from the right.

“We came straight back at them and after we’d scored, we were trying to get another goal in the last eight or nine minutes but the chance never really came.

“If we’d had the choice we’d definitely have taken winning in the FA Vase (against Ardley United) last week, so nobody was crying too much about losing in the Wiltshire Cup.”

Corsham boss Rawlings revealed that he has made a seven-day approach for Calne Town goalkeeper Jamie Bartlett.

Both sides are in Les Phillips Cup action this weekend, with Corsham travelling to Roman Glass St George whilst Park host Premier Division Wlland Rovers.
