DEREK Graham thought that his Warminster Town side could well have been on their way to bagging all three points against county rivals Devizes Town last weekend.

Saturday’s game at Weymouth Street looked in doubt on Saturday morning as the wet weather battered Warminster’s playing surface but the clash did eventually get underway before being abandoned by the match referee just past the half-hour mark.

The hosts led 1-0 through Tom Golledge’s strike but despite his frustration, joint-manager Graham admits that the game probably shouldn’t have ever got started.

“When I was at the ground in the morning, I didn’t really think that the game was going to be on but we did a lot of work to get the standing water off the pitch,” said Graham.

“To be honest, the referee didn’t really want to play the game but said that he was happy to get it started if both sides wanted that.

“If I was him, I probably would have stuck to my guns and not played it. It’s a shame that they (Devizes) had to travel but we had a big crowd in the bar afterwards and only a few people at the ground asked for a refund.

and it was frustrating because we coped so much better with the conditions than they did – we played some wonderful football and could have been three or four goals up.

“It’s a shame for Tom Golledge because he’s scored a lot of goals recently and that one won’t count.

“Not to be detrimental to Devizes but we thought we could have won the game and we’ve got Portishead next, who we’d be confident of getting a win against – if we’d picked up six points, you don’t know how much things could change.”
