TODAY Britain; tomorrow, the world.

That’s the rallying cry from promoter Mick Hennessy as he pledges to make Nick Blackwell a world champion after he became king of the country last weekend.

Trowbridge’s ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell provided one of the biggest stories of a stellar night of boxing at London’s O2 Arena last Saturday as he spectacularly stopped the rock-solid John Ryder to claim the vacant British middleweight title.

The third time was the charm for the 24-year-old, who lost to Martin Murray when making a speculative challenge for the British belt in June 2011 and was also out-pointed by Billy Joe Saunders in December 2012, and Hennessy backs Blackwell to be able to best those two conquerors and a whole host more as his career heads on an upward trajectory.

“He’s getting better and better and better. He’s capable of beating all of the names mentioned when the time’s right,” promoter Hennessy told the Wiltshire Times.

“He really is a special talent and a special fighter and he could go on to do big things in the sport.

“The sky’s the limit and I’m going to look to make him into a quality world champion.

“He’s not a 12-round fighter. He’s a 15-round fighter and he’s a special talent. He’s going to do big things – I promise that.”

British title defences and even glitzier title scraps could now be on the menu for Trowbridge’s new incumbent of the prestigious Lonsdale belt in the future.

Blackwell’s emotions were at an all-time high following last weekend’s sensational triumph and he even had to briefly pinch himself to prove it wasn’t all a figment of his imagination.

“You know when you have a really good dream and you wake up and wish it was real? It feels like I’m in that dream. But it is real,” he said.

“The thing is, it’s just opened up all these doors for me and I’m going to be fighting massive fights now.”
