TROWBRIDGE'S British middleweight champion Nick Blackwell will defend his strap on live television for the second time against unbeaten Elliott Matthews next month, it was confirmed today.

'Bang Bang' Blackwell will take on southpaw Matthews on Saturday, November 14 at Bristol's City Academy, with the fight being screened live on Channel 5.

Watford challenger Matthews, 34, is undefeated in 16 professional fights and is the current Southern Area middleweight champion, having boxed as an amateur for both Repton and Callowland amateur boxing clubs before turning pro in January 2012

He won the Southern Area middleweight title in September 2013 with a 10-round decision win over Gary Boulden, and then successfully defended it five months later against Diego Burton.

Having knocked out three of his last four opponents, 'The Knockout King' Matthews will be the third southpaw opponent Blackwell will have faced in a row, after winning the Lonsdale belt with a seventh-round stoppage of John Ryder at London's O2 in May, then defending it with a stoppage of Damon Jones in July.

“Blackwell is on an incredible run of form at the moment and has produced two of the most dramatic moments in British boxing this year,” said promoter Mick Hennessy.

“His win over Ryder was a big upset in many people's eyes and his knockout against Jones was as good as any you'll see.

“What's even more impressive is the fact he's looking to take fighters' unbeaten records and stop men who don't usually get stopped. Ryder, for example, had never been stopped before he met Blackwell, and Jones had never lost a pro fight.

“Elliott Matthews is a dangerous challenger with all the ambition and confidence that comes with an unbeaten record.

"But, as with Jones, Blackwell will be looking to take Matthews out of his comfort zone and hand him his first taste of defeat. All in all, it should make for another Blackwell classic.”

The middleweight title fight, scheduled for 12 rounds, tops a bill that also includes appearances from Hughie Lewis Fury, Young Fury and Yusuf Safa, as well as local lads David Bailey, Duane Winters, Dan Sarkozi, Lee Nutland, Ashley Lane, Ryan Wheeler, Liam Hunt and Tim Cutler.

Tickets for the Bristol card are available at the Ticketline Box Office on 0844 888 4402, the Sanigar Events Box Office on 0117 949 6699 or by visiting hennessysports.com.

The fight will be televised live and exclusively on Channel 5 from 10pm on the night.
