BRADFORD on Avon couple Laura Backhouse and Chris Moore certainly got their timing spot-on in the Calne Clock Challenge 10k.

Despite losing an hour’s sleep with the clocks moving forward, the husband and wife team were out of the blocks lightning quick, with Backhouse winning the women’s race and Moore finishing third in the men’s event in his fastest time for eight years.

“The Calne Clock Challenge is a really good race and the prize was good – a clock,” said Backhouse, who finished 21st of the 216 finishers in a time of 40mins 11secs to put her almost two minutes clear of Calne’s Lucy Morrison (42:03).

“I was pleased to win the race, which was my first competition of 2017. My aim now is to be more consistent and my next race is likely to be the Great Bristol 10k.”

Husband Chris, who is also a member of Team Bath AC, was delighted to finish third in the men’s race in a time of 35:32, with victory going to veteran Gary Dunstone of Chippenham Harriers (35:11). Swindon Striders was John Lewis (35:30) was runner-up.

Hilperton’s English Schools’ multi events international Rory Howorth is among the entries for the Team Bath AC FieldFest meeting at the university on Sunday.

The St Augustine’s Catholic College student has entered the high jump, pole vault and shot events as he continues to focus on his multi events while fellow multi eventer Jenna Blundell from Staverton tackles the long jump, shot and javelin.

Meeting organiser Di Viles said: “The deadline is this Friday, March 31, and I will be taking entries via email and will allow athletes to pay the entry fee on the day.

“But there will be strictly no entries allowed on the day so contact me in advance.”
