DEVON athlete Shaun Antell emerged victorious when a record 600 runners contested the eighth running of the Wiltshire 10, sponsored by the Wiltshire Times, on Sunday.
In somewhat chilly conditions, the field set off from Lowborne Road in Melksham town centre and headed out to Lacock.
After looping around Reybridge, the runners faced a headwind as they headed back to the finish alongside the Rive Avon in King George V playing fields.
Making light of the conditions was Bideford AAC’s Antell, who came home first in an impressive time of 52 minutes 10 seconds, three clear of his nearest challenger.
Second place went to Team Bath’s Aaron Pritchard, with Peter Grist, of Frome Running Club, third but having the consolation of the team prize alongside club-mates Joseph Donworth, Lee Stone and Stuart Clarke.
The ladies’ race saw another Devon runner in Tiverton Harriers’ Serane Stone take victory, completing the gently undulating course in 61:36 ahead of Jane Faram, of Bristol’s Southville Running Club, and Chippenham Harriers’ Vicky Green.
The Bitton Road Runners trio of Lucy Wallace, Liz Sanigar and Lynette Porter took the team prize.
Other winners were: MV40 – Gary Dunstone (Team Bath AC); MV50 – Dave Lowthian (Forest of Dean AC); MV60 – David Vaudin (Team Bath AC); FV40 – Emma Hines (Chippenham Harriers); FV50 – Lynette Porter (Bitton Road Runners); FV60 – Helen Hugheson (Bath).
All finishers received a specially-minted medal featuring the Wiltshire flag and a copy of the Wiltshire Times.
