TROWBRIDGE Town manager Allan Clarke wasn’t surprised that his team needed extra-time to get past Wiltshire League outfit FC Chippenham Youth in the Wiltshire Senior Cup on Saturday.

Paul Gittens gave Trowbridge the lead before Ajay Arithoppha headed Chippenham’s equaliser.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead late in the second-half from the penalty spot but Jordan Coulter’s kick was saved by Rob Elliot before Jamie Croydon headed the winner in extra-time.

“It was a tough game but we were expecting that and I would have taken a 1-0 victory before the game,” said the Trowbridge chief. “We might not have come back if they’d scored the penalty but both teams had a lot of chancs and I’m glad we avoided a potential banana skin.”

Chippenham boss Dave Ferris insisted: “We dominated the game and I am stunned that we didn’t get a result. We had chance after chance - it’s the old saying: if you don’t take your chances, you don’t win games.”

Trowbridge will travel to Bradford Town or Malmesbury Victoria in the quarter-finals of the competition in January.

Tomorrow, Clarke’s men travel to struggling Hook Norton, who have yet to win a game this season.

Paul Beevers and Ross Parker could be back in the squad while manager Clarke has also returned to full fitness after eight weeks out with a groin injury.

“I don’t really want to use myself but I will fill in in defence if I need to,” he said.
