TROWBRIDGE pro Steve Surry saw a strong position snatched from his grasp by strong winds at the Sunshine Tour's Sun Boardwalk Golf Challenge in South Africa today.

Cumberwell Park touring pro Surry added a second-round 73 - a superb score in the conditions - to his opening 71 to take the clubhouse lead at the event.

However, with winds gusting up to 60 kilometres an hour and players yet to finish, organisers cancelled the second round, meaning the field reverted to their first-round scores ahead of tomorrow's third and final 18 holes.

The Wiltshire man tweeted his displeasure at the decision, saying: "How to go from tied for the lead to three shots behind? Simple cancel second round scores #nothappy.

Earlier, after his fine round, he told the Tour website: “Shooting 73 today feels like 65 to be honest. It was tough out there and blew just the same as yesterday. There were a few par-fours that I couldn’t reach in two shots.

“I had 30 putts today, yesterday I had 26, and that’s been the key in this wind. If they keep playing this afternoon then level-par after two rounds will be a good score, considering the conditions.

“The weather sort of suits me, because I’m used to it. I’m lucky enough to have played Humewood a lot of times. I started solid and went two-under through seven, and even though I bogeyed eight and nine I did putt and chip well."

Explaining the decision to cancel the second round, tournament director Theo Manyama said: “The course was very unplayable today, especially in the afternoon, because the balls were not staying on the greens. We’ve decided to reduce the tournament to 36 holes, with a cut based on the first round scores.
