CUMBERWELL Park professionals Steve Surry and Laurie Canter battled a tough course on the opening day of the Australian PGA Championship in Queensland this morning.

The duo, both playing their second event on the European Tour in successive weeks, finished over par at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast where, with the wind up,only six players finished under par.

Trowbridge's Surry, who missed the cut at the Alfred Dunhull Championship in South Africa last week, fared the better of the two, carding a four over par 76 which included two birdies to lie tied 46th after the opening day.

Canter, who has gained his European Tour card for the 2016 season and finished just outside the top 30 last week, dropped five shots on the back nine as he posted a 79.

Former Amateur Championship runner-up Zander Lombard dominated the opening day to establish a two shot lead over England’s Mark Foster.

Lombard, beaten by Scotland’s Bradley Neil in last year’s amateur showpiece at Royal Portrush, carded five birdies in his round of 67.
