CUMBERWELL Park golfer Laurie Canter will tee it up alongside the world's best later this month after winning a place at the 146th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale this evening.

Canter, who is based at the Bradford on Avon club, came through one of five local final qualifying events held throughout the country today to land a spot at his third major championship, having also reached the Open at St Andrews in 2010 while an amateur.

The 27 year old booked his place via a play-off against amateurs Stefano Mazzoli of Italy and England's Rhys Nevin-Wharton after carding rounds of 67 and 72 at the Notts Hollinwell Golf Course.

Canter's clubmate Steve Surry finished tied 17th at the same venue after rounds of 73 and 70.
