SWINDON-BORN Hannah Miley was fifth in the 400m individual medley final at the London Aquatics Centre tonight.

Chinese sensation Shiwen Ye destroyed the field on the freestyle leg to take gold in a world record time of 4:28.43, with world champion Elizabeth Beisel second and Li Xuanxu third.

The 22-year-old Miley was at the rear of the field early on and could not significantly close the gap on the front-runners in the second half of the race.

Nevertheless, the 2011 World Championship silver medallist was in philosophical mood afterwards despite missing out on a podium finish.

“I'm gutted I didn't get a medal but I gave it everything I had,” she said.

“It was one place better than I did in Beijing. It was a solid swim, it could have been a lot worse.

“I'd like to thank everyone for their support, it means a lot.”
