IT’S BEEN a tough season, where the performances have been there but it’s the outcomes that have missing.

There’s been a lot of soul searching going on because it was obviously frustrating not winning a game, but I sat down and looked at the tables the other day and saw that out of a possible 48 bonus points, we picked up 42 in the championship this season.

Only Hertfordshire won more and that shows that there is a lot that we’ve been getting right this summer.

I think that it’s highlighted how important it is to carry on performing in the second innings of three-day games and there have just been a few sessions that have let us down.

There were also a few one-day games where we’d got to 230-odd, which is a good score, but we were all out with 15 overs left to play.

It’s not all doom and gloom though - there have been plenty of positives to take out of the season.

Tahir Afridi’s taken 36 wickets this year and then there was a debut century from Neil Clark in the one-day competition.

There was another good hundred from Ed Kilbee and of course, we can’t forget Michael Coles’ magnificent 227 against Shropshire and his 185 when we played against Hereford-shire in the last game of the season.

For us, I think that the key going forward will be to try and discover that killer instinct on a regular basis.

I can think of a few games where we’ve been in a position to get a result but just haven’t managed to get ourselves over the line.

I remember last season when we hadn’t won a game in the championship for three years and then we had that victory against Wales. In the next game, we then went and beat Herefordshire.

We’ve built up a side over a few years and hopefully the experience of this season will help them all improve going forward.
