WE HAD a hard-fought game against Herefordshire in our latest Unicorns Championship match but the lads fought really well over the three days and we are thrilled with the win.

They ought to be proud of the performance they put in. It was a really good result, although it went right down to the wire.

It probably has happened before but I can’t remember a game where we had three separate centurions.

There were a couple of really good knocks in there and the crucial ones were in the first innings.

We bleat on about trying to get first-innings runs and first-innings points and we did that.

We had been 135-5, so we were up against it a little bit, but Michael Coles’ innings and the one from Patrick Greishaber were both tremendous.

It was over a 200-run partnership, which was a record for that wicket, and that set us up for the victory.

Michael set the tone for us on the first day but it wasn’t really a typical Michael Coles knock. He tends to get in and puts bat to ball and likes to impose himself on the bowlers.

It was a more controlled innings in line of the position that we found ourselves in and he was supported extremely well by Patrick, who also contributed superbly.

It was a great effort and setting 392 in the first innings and getting all the bonus points was great.

Even they picked up all their bonus points but they still found themselves 60 runs behind and that was crucial come the end of the game.

We found ourselves in a little bit of strife overnight on the second day and Neil Clark had to bat extremely well to get us out of a little bit of a hole.

We managed to get out and set them around about what we wanted to set them - 325 to 330.

Tahir Afridi bowled a mammoth spell on the final day to seal the win. He bowled some left arm seam and left-arm spin. He just showed the talent he has.

There is no chance of us really winning the league and there is only a slight outside opportunity that we might get into second but I said to the guys beforehand our aim is to win the game and try to finish on a positive note and if we can get into the top three, that still winds up as a pretty positive season.
