MELKSHAM came unstuck as they made the trip to Bassett in Dorset & Wilts One North.
The visitors were first on the scoresheet courtesy of a penalty try with Matt Glover taken out without the ball from a kick ahead in the opposition 22.
Simon Foster added the conversion but Bassett were quick to respond, firstly being held up over the line before eventually touching down after a scrum drive over the line.
The home team struck again just before half time to go 12-7 up.
Upon the restart the visitors were quick to strike and retake the lead with full-back Adam Davies breaking through to score, Gareth Evans adding the extras.
The home team again responded with another pushover try and added a further two tries and a penalty to take a firm hold on the game.
The visitors began a fightback with a try from prop Matt Plumb, Evans adding the extras but the recovery snuffed out with Bassett’s’ next score wrapping up victory.
Melksham skipper Callum Hurn said: “We were on par throughout the game with Bassett until they put together a few strong phases.
"They had the edge on us, but we shall look forward to the return fixture at home to reciprocate.''
