I write to thank all those residents who have contacted me about last week’s visit of Rail Minister Stephen Hammond. Many questioned whether it is realistic to reignite this long running campaign. I want to give my view of why it’s now viable to get Corsham station reopened.

Firstly, the opportunity for business investment. There are large companies (linked into many universities) who want to make Corsham a “data hub.” Amazingly, over one per cent of all the worlds’ internet traffic travels through Corsham. One per cent doesn’t sound like a large amount but it’s billions of pieces of data.

This project could create 1,500 hi-tech local jobs but the companies’ links with universities mean that it’s only possible with strong public transport links.

Secondly, for the first time Corsham Station has been put front and centre in the Wiltshire Council/Local Enterprise Partnership’s bid to government for growth funding to improve local infrastructure and the local economy.

Third, the growth of Bristol and Bath means those cities need to improve their commuter transport to take pressure off the roads.

Both cities are keen to be involved with this project. There may be opportunities for help with funding but regional political pressure (not party political) is important to see this project succeed.

Fourthly, Wiltshire Council has confirmed it owns more than enough land to make it a viable project. There is enough for the station, car park and improved access.

Finally (but not least important) I got the Rail Minister to agree to a meeting between campaigners and the Department for Transport. This is important because in that meeting will be the key decision makers and we can make a case directly.

So to summarise, the business case is very strong, there is a unique opportunity for additional funding to make it viable and the community overwhelmingly support the project. It’s still a long process but there is a genuine and realistic chance that we can make it happen. Let’s pull together and finally win this campaign for our community.
