On July 17 and again on July 19 my driveway, garage and covered passageway at the side of the house were badly flooded.

The rain was very heavy but matters were made much worse by the fact that the contractors responsible for keeping the verges tidy have not done so.

They delayed cutting the grass until it was at least 18cm high, not only did this look unsightly but when the heavy rains came the dry grass cuttings were washed over drains and blocked the passage of water thereby adding to the flooding problems.

My driveway was also covered by dead grass when the flood subsided.

They also have a novel way of trimming the edges – instead of using a strimmer they keep the edges clear by using weed killer to a depth of 10cm or so, making the verge even more unsightly.

I appreciate the council making savings wherever they possibly can but they should not be employing contractors who are unable to carry out the basics.

Last year our verges were kept in a reasonable state.

Please, council, make the contractors do the job to a satisfactory level or employ someone who can.
