Councillor Jeff Osborn’s letter (Wiltshire Times, October 31) unfortunately does not accurately reflect the debate that took place at the full council meeting on October 21, nor does it reflect the decision that was reached.

Of course now that we are webcasting full council meetings, Wiltshire Times readers have the opportunity to watch again and hear the debate for themselves. However, given this was a fairly lengthy debate, I thought it would be helpful for your readers if I restate the outcome.

We recognised and fully appreciate the financial challenges that the fire authority needs to address and we are aware of the work that has gone into looking at various options for the future provision of this service.

However, we did raise concern about the gap in funding, the uncertainty with regard to equalisation of precepts and the governance arrangements which could potentially disadvantage Wiltshire.

The council, therefore, decided it would be sensible to seek assurance regarding these concerns, along with hearing the views of local residents, prior to committing to any of the proposed future options.

Cllr Osborn claims that Conservative councillors attacked the fire authority, which was not the case. We are very supportive of the authority, and whichever option it decides upon, we would welcome the opportunity to continue to work together and to consider ways to reduce costs in both our organisations for the benefit of the people of Wiltshire.

Jane Scott OBE, Leader, Wiltshire Council.
