With great concern I read about the poor lady who lost control of her car and crashed into a house in Bradford on Avon.

I have been driving all manner of cars, manual and automatic, for over 46 years, happily without incident.

However I do worry about elderly drivers who change to automatics as on two occasions such people have crashed into the back of my parked vehicle when they’ve pressed the throttle instead of the brake.

Worse than that, the same happened to a friend of mine who was loading shopping into the boot of her car.

By sheer luck, she went to the side of the car just as an old man in an automatic Fiesta hit her car so hard that it was a write-off.

Had she not moved two seconds earlier, she would certainly have lost her legs or worse.

I really do feel that drivers new to automatics should be made to have some tuition just as I believe caravan owners should be taught to load them properly and drive accordingly.

I have no desire to spend hours sitting on a motorway after yet another one has overturned.
