Re resurfacing around the war memorial in Bratton (Letters, September 11): the road surface adjacent to the war memorial at Bratton was deteriorating badly, with potholes forming which were sufficiently deep to pose a safety risk.

The section of road is not heavily trafficked, but is used by pedestrians and the sensitivity of the area meant that it was considered that a repair should be made.

The council has a programme of works to resurface and repair roads of all types across the network. The overall condition of Wiltshire’s roads is very similar to those across the south west. However, Wiltshire does have the advantage of increased investment in road maintenance and we are beginning to see the benefits of this as we address the backlog of highway maintenance, which is a national problem.

Generally priority is given to the high speed main roads, but it is also necessary to carry out repairs on minor roads to keep them in safe condition.
