HAVING read Alison Phillips’ column, October 30: the new path will be an unsegregated shared use path (I imagine) and not a cycle path.
This appears to be the favoured path style of Wiltshire Council and also advocated by cycling charity Sustrans. It is the style of path from Trowbridge to Bradford on Avon.
I doubt a white line will appear. The thinking being that sharing the unsegregated path will encourage cyclists to ride safely and slow for pedestrians as opposed to thinking that, with a white line in the middle, they can whizz along at 20mph.
I don’t like them riding quickly. I prefer to ride with the flow of traffic and maintain the same level of road use priority. Out with the kids for a gentle pootle along, they’re fine.
When constructing a new road with plenty of space around, it is a shame more thought couldn’t be made to cater for all: segregated cars/bikes/pedestrians.
