REVIEW: Trowbridge Symphony Orchestra

Civic Hall, Trowbridge This was a thoroughly enjoyable concert which represented a real achievement for this orchestra.

It consisted of performances of Englebert Humperdinck’s Overture Hansel and Gretel, Mendelssohn’s violin concerto, with guest soloist Nadia Myerscough, and Rachmaninov’s 2nd Symphony.

In the Hansel and Gretel the French horn and oboe playing were beautiful. The strings were confident and it all made a good introduction to the concert.

The highlight of the programme was the Mendelssohn violin concerto which immediately made an impression due to the fine solo violin playing with its exquisite phrasing, well projected above the orchestra’s very refined accompaniment.

The Rachmaninov symphony showed great affinity for the composer’s distinctive style of writing and the final movement in particular had great assurance and verve.

The new leader of the orchestra Carmen Mirza was excellent and it was conducted expertly by David Price.

I look forward to future concerts.
