VETERANS are being asked to share their memories and memorabilia for a celebratory week of events this summer.

Trowbridge Town Council is organising activities to coincide with national Veterans' Day, on June 27, and the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.

The first Veterans' Day was held last year when it was decided it would become an annual event. The Ministry of Defence is providing funding for towns to host celebrations and events planned for Trowbridge include a show of memorabilia, displays, talks and a veterans dinner.

Steve Nash, from Trowbridge Town Council, said: "We've asked people to come forward who want to get involved in providing displays or bringing military vehicles along to the show in Trowbridge Park on June 23.

"We especially want to hear from veterans themselves.

"We are putting on various other displays during the week. There is one running in Trowbridge Museum and we'd like people to come along and give talks to the school kids who will be visiting."

"This year is also the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict and the Territorial Army is 100 years old. The Scouts and Guides are also celebrating an anniversary so it's a good year to do something big," said Mr Nash.

"The day recognises what people have lived through and it's a chance to be more supportive of them."

The week of celebration will end on June 29 with a dinner at the Civic Hall, Trowbridge, where West Wilts MP Dr Andrew Murrison will be presenting veterans badges to those who have never received one.

Businesses are being invited to sponsor events or pay for veterans' seats at the dinner.

A spokesman for the Veterans' Agency said it was important for local communities to support the events.

"Veterans' Day is a focal point for people up and down the land and raises the profile of veterans in the local community," he said.

"An awful lot of ex-servicemen and women don't realise they are veterans so they are not in a position to access a wide range of support from the government and ex-service charitable societies.

"There are still those who think of veterans as the old boys from the Second World War but veterans can be of any age."
