Former nurse Sue Gilby is gearing up to walk across a section of The Great Wall of China next week to raise money for the hospital she once worked in.
She left for the six-day trek yesterday and will be joined by 13 fundraisers to raise money for the new Cancer Centre at Royal United Hospital in Bath. The team has already raised £40,000.
Mrs Gilby was a nurse at the RUH for five years and a practice nurse at Box Surgery for 10 years, before setting up Still Meadows Bed and Breakfast in Winsley 17 years ago.
The team is walking three to seven hours a day and sleeping in hotels, dormitories and with families along the route.
Mrs Gilby, 57, of Bradford Road, Winsley, said: “I have been walking, having my vaccinations and getting my kit together. The temperature will be quite cold in the morning and evenings so it is important to pack the right clothing and have sturdy boots.”
