WITH reference to Cllr Blakemore's letter (Wiltshire Times Jan 19), I don't know what meeting he is referring to as every Town Hall meeting I have attended, and that is seven or eight, plus the town poll, have all had a very large majority against the Town Hall project.

As for the Wiltshire Times poll he is referring to, I obviously won't argue with 44 per cent leaning toward keeping the Town Hall but would say this poll cannot be relied on. Myself and a number of associates did not take part as the last Wiltshire Times poll on this subject was allegedly corrupt. As the votes not in favour rose, the ones for escalated to more votes than homes in Trowbridge. To the credit of the Wiltshire Times they quickly intercepted this and aborted the poll.

As the Town Hall is a Grade II listed building, this only means the outside façade has to be left unaltered but the inside can be changed, which it already has been when the courts were held there. I suggest it could be converted into flats or offices with ample convenient parking to the rear of the building.

Trowbridge Town Council has already given the Town Hall away once in 1974/5 to WWDC, which Gareth Roberts (retired councillor) informed us in the Wiltshire Times recently, as it was not feasible for Trowbridge Town Council to fund. It was deemed a burden on the ratepayers so what's different now, with even higher taxes having to be funded by the poor ratepayer once again?

Cllr Blakemore refers to a parking bay in front of the Town Hall. Thousands of pounds have been spent narrowing Silver Street, widening pavements including in front of the Town Hall. There is no space there. As for town centre churches, you will find all have very nearby car parking. It is misleading to use this argument.

As for the TIC we already fund this on our tax. Whatever money we pay now would have to increase to support it if in the expensive Town Hall. The bottom line is Cllr Blakemore and the 11 councillors are totally relying on the transfer of the registrar service to the Town Hall as their only saviour, but they know as well as we do that is a non-starter.
