CLLR Malcolm Rosier's letter (Wiltshire Times, Jan 19) may have been accurate in its identification of the some of the problems with the railway service in Wiltshire, however it entirely misallocates the blame for these issues.

The new timetable, which is the underlying cause of many of the difficulties experienced by passengers, was set by the Department for Transport. Unfortunately it was done so without either local knowledge or an appreciation of the future growth in rail traffic. The result is the present overcrowding.

While First Great Western runs the service on a day-to-day basis, it is only a contractor to the government and has to abide by the DfT's wishes and instructions. It is thus extremely unfair to blame FGW for a situation that is both not of its causing and, to a degree, completely outside of its control.
