WEST Ashton Road does, indeed, need more safety measures, following the serious accident to a pedestrian near Green Lane.

I have, since 2002, regularly walked via Clarendon Avenue to Trowbridge Oaks Nursing Home. Secondary school children cross the road to walk or cycle to school. Many people walk from the Green Lane area to Tesco or beyond into Trowbridge Park and the town centre every day.

Yet drivers from the A361 County Way, with its 40mph limit between the Hilperton Road and Tesco roundabouts, pay scant regard to the solitary 30mph sign on entering the unclassified West Ashton Road.

Mr Maidment (Letters, Jan 19) was right to say safety measures have not kept pace with the volume of traffic. The Trowbridge Community Area Plan for 2004-14 says it will encourage cycling and walking. To do this in West Ashton Road traffic speed reductions are needed now.
