WINCHESTER CITY are organising a summer football tournament in the city during July as part of the club's strategy to work closely with the local community and businesses and to assist the twinning associations in their aims of attracting more members of all ages.

After a break of over 30 years, when Kerkrade and Versailles took part in a similar event, the football teams from Winchester's twin cities, Laon in France and Giessen in Germany, will come to Winchester to compete in a tournament designed to assist in raising the profile of the football club and the twinning associations as well as raise funds for charity.

Both teams, Union Sportive Laon and TS Giessen-Wieseck, play at around the same level as City in their respective national football structures, although US Laon have reached the last 32 of this year's Coupe de France where they take on Lyon, the champions of France for the last four years.

The event is supported by the Winchester City Council, the twinning associations and the football club's main sponsor, Denplan Ltd, who will play a match against a Tournament XI, drawn from the three competing teams to raise funds for the Denplan Charitable Trust which supports many national and international charities Anyone interested in becoming involved with the tournament in any way should contact Colin Smith, c/o Winchester City F.C.
