A man, believed to be in his 70s, has been pronounced dead, after being found in a river near The Gateway in Melksham at 3.15pm today.
Police received a report from a member of the public and attended the scene with ambulance crews, where they found the man, who was still alive on arrival.
He was taken to hospital, but was later pronounced dead. Members of the public reported seeing the man in town with facial injuries earlier in the day.
The Bath Road Recreation Area near to The Gateway has been sealed off and two officers are currently there preserving the scene.
Police have also been examining a pavement in Blackmore Road where a pair of glasses were lying and were later put in an evidence bag.
Residents who live nearby are unsure what has happened but they have been approached by police to see whether they have any information.
It has not been confirmed whether the two incident scenes are linked.
Police are currently treating the death as unexplained and are appealing for anyone with information to contact 101.
