The chronic, disabling condition ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) can have a significant impact on patients’ lives, leaving them unable to care for themselves. Husbands, wives, partners, siblings and children often have to take on the vital role of carer, and they need help and support.
Mary, who is in her seventies and has arthritis, has been her daughter Susan’s carer since she developed ME twelve years ago. “I have never once been asked how I am managing,” says Mary. “I love my daughter and of course I will care for her as long as I am able, but it doesn’t address the fact that help is needed.”
Carers can call 0117 927 9551 to order our Caring for Somebody with ME booklet or visit the Friends and Family section in our online ME centre at actionforme.org.uk
