WARMINSTER’S Civic Trust will be dissolved after it was decided at a special general meeting that the charity’s activities could be covered by other groups in the town, ending its 43-year history.

Treasurer of the Civic Trust and a member for five years, Diana Miller, said: “I think it’s sad but there are things that can be done by other groups and alternative ways it can be done."

“The fact that a considerable majority voted for it to be dissolved does confirm that’s the best thing to do.”

Despite having 200 members, the charity, which was founded in 1972, failed to attract enough people to its AGM in May, forcing it to hold another meeting at the Warminster Civic Centre last Friday.

There were no nominations for a new chairman and secretary with David Carter and Sue Lewis stepping down from their respective positions due to other commitments.

A motion to dissolve the charity was passed by 23 votes in favour, with one against and two abstentions.

The charity was formed to protect Warminster’s heritage and character. over the years and worked in partnership with the town council, the Warminster and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the Warminster and Villages Community Partnership, as well as other societies representing the town.

“The problem we had was getting the new blood in and so this meant the committee was quite small, especially with the chairman and secretary standing down,” said Ms Miller.

“We were relying on people from the community to come forward but it didn’t happen and there was nothing we could do but wind it up.”
