FRIENDS of Trowbridge Park are hoping to bag the support of Tesco customers to fund a new project to tidy up the area that joins the park to Biss Meadows.

The Bags of Help initiative is offering three community groups the chance to win a slice of £30,000, proceeds of the national carrier bag tax.

Customers will be able to vote in store from Saturday until March 6 using tokens given to them at the check-out.

Voting will determine the amount of money received by the groups, either £12,000, £10,000 or £8,000.

The supermarket has teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative using money raised from the 5p bag levy.

Sharl Adabashi, FoTP chairman said: he hopes the local community gives the project support.

He added: “The project hopes to achieve a few objectives. The first is that visitors to Trowbridge do not know there is Trowbridge Town Park and Biss Meadows Country Park in the area. “The money will go towards new information boards to allow people to discover what gems there are on their doorstep.

“The other objective is for visitors or residents using that pathway not to feel intimidated by the overgrown greenery, trip hazards and by the unsightly fences.

“We only have about 10 ten days to go until it closes and it is very tight so we need to get the support of people behind us.

“I am stopped by people to say how do they get to Biss Meadow because they get to the under path and they are a bit hesitate and it is like a dead end. We have been thinking about it since we took on the park project and it has been a matter of decided what projects we had to deal with and the financing them.”

The improvements include erecting new information boards, improving the sense of safety and security and generally making the area more welcoming for visitors

Mr Adabashi added: “We are doing our bit, Let’s hope neighbouring areas take up our initiative and tidy up their part.”

“When the opportunity came up for Bags of Help, we jumped for the chance and we got the application in by the skin of our teeth.

“By getting the money, it benefits the FoTP and it benefits the Friends of the Biss Meadow Country Park. The biggest winners are the local community. They are going to get a link and a pathway that feels more secure and more attractive.”
