POLICE arrested a Trowbridge man this morning after he failed to stop his car for officers.

At around 12.20am, police saw a Volkswagen Golf being driven in Stallard Street and officers believed the vehicle was being driven illegally.

The VW Golf continued at speed along Wicker Hill, Hill Street and Shails Lane and when officers attempted to pull the vehicle over in Seymour Road, the driver made off, driving dangerously into Jenkins Street.

The driver, a 27-year-old man, continued at speed and then stopped and ran off on foot onto Melton Road before officers caught up with him.

After checks were carried out on the car, police found that there was no insurance while further checks showed that the driver only had a provisional licence and had recently been banned from driving.

He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop a vehicle for a police officer, drink driving, driving a vehicle without insurance and driving whilst disqualified.

He remains in Melksham custody this afternoon.

Anyone with information on the incident should call police on 101.
