AMONG the long list of ambassadors and missions to other countries, I was astonished to find that we have one to the European Union and no less than three to the United Nations. In these days of instant communication and swift air travel I find this surprising.
Centuries ago it was obviously necessary to have somebody resident in a foreign country to represent our interests but what is their purpose today? We have numerous government appointees to carry out these duties.
When we do ever see an ambassador representing the UK in discussions with other countries, it is invariably a member of the government, the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary etc.
We also have many Members of the European Parliament. Some of these appointments will disappear when we withdraw from the European Union but I feel that there is scope for a full review of our diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.
