A PLAN to build a bungalow in a Trowbridge garden will not be allowed to go ahead after a government inspector threw out the application in June.

Westbury man Patrick Ranger applied last year to build in the garden of a house on Springfield Park in Trowbridge but, after neighbours wrote to Wiltshire Council in protest, councillors turned down his application in November.

Wiltshire councillors said the development would be ‘cramped’ and ‘out of keeping with the character and appearance of the area’.

Mr Ranger then argued that the decision should be overturned because neither Trowbridge Town Council nor Wiltshire Council’s planning officer had objected to the plan before it went to a committee vote.

He said it would also provide a ‘much needed’ wheelchair-friendly home.

After a visit in May, a Government inspector said the planning committee had been ‘entitled’ to refuse permission, and agreed with its decision.

The inspector added: “Introducing such a large structure on a comparatively small plot would result in a cramped and incongruous appearance.

"It would erode the mature planting and would be out of keeping with the prevailing character of the development along this part of Springfield Park, causing a harmful visual impact and detracting from the character and appearance of the area.”
